The Road to Freedom is a history of one of the 23 Colored Infantry Regiments formed in Kentucky. It is called the Road to Freedom because Kentucky was not in rebellion so the Emancipation Proclamation did not free the slaves there. By enlisting in the Army they gained not only their freedom, but the freedom of their families. This regiment guarded Confederate prisoners at Rock Island, IL. The Regiment was sent to Mississippi as occupation troops. That is where the Regiment was mustered-out of service and sent home.
