Florence Perkins grew up in a family that was strictly vegan but when she became an adult she became interested in trying new things without making the wrong choices, which would end up with her gaining unnecessary weight. She made the decision to play it safe and ended up choosing the protein diet as something to try. She would get to try a variety of meats without worrying that she would get fat. She had the blessing of her family as though they chose to be vegan; they had no objections to their children trying new things. Florence found the diet to be quite tasty and extremely beneficial. She was able to maintain her weight as well. As a result of this she became a supporter of the diet to the point where she ended up writing her own book about it.
