These pioneer wrestlers popularized American professional wrestling in the 19th Century.
Homer Lane, J. H. McLaughlin, H.M. Dufur, and John McMahon popularized collar-and-elbow wrestling in the 1860s and 1870s. William Muldoon popularized Greco-Roman wrestling but Andre Christol and Thiebaud Bauer established it. If he had lived, Clarence Whistler may have surpassed all three.
And then there is Yusuf Ismail. No one dominated professional wrestling like he did during five months in 1898.
