Progress to Practice
PROTECT is a novel approach to familiar crisis care. To truly identify the source of emotional pain and suffering, professionals have to shift from establishing what's the matter with you to what matters to you. Suicidal distress emanates from something deeply meaningful to the person, knowing this source can help chip away at the pain or improve tolerance to it. PROTECT shifts the focus from deficits to assets and moves professionals from being on top (fixer) to being on tap (supporter/enabler), helping unlock the tremendous potential that lies within each individual. Without risk there is no recovery, but given the balancing act of life and death, a professional needs highly nuanced skills, skills that help people survive their crisis and also flourish on the road to recovery. The scientific literature has been combined with contemporary practice from two internationally acclaimed initiatives from Cambridge, UK; 333 - a recovery-oriented model of inpatient/community crisis care and PROMISE - a national award winning programme to reduce coercion in care by enhancing patient experience. The result is the art of Relational Safety and PROactive deTECTion.
Captured in three modules, they are:
- CORE: Foundational module to balance risk and recovery, optimise pain relief, rethink risk and practice empathy in action.
- ASSESS: Assessment module to balance facts and feelings, make mindful decision, apply ideation to action models, thorough but time efficient assessment techniques, safety formulation and illustrative documentation.
- ASPIRE: Recovery module to balance safety and self-reliance through a solution focused partnership, spanning safety planning amid a crisis to person-centred monitoring and long term resilience building and realisation of a life that is meaningful to the person.
Through innovative approaches incorporating the latest research, intuitive structure and sequence to simplify complexity, interactive case studies for discussion and reflection, PROTECT hopes to bring progress to practice and passion to purpose in the care of people in suicidal distress.
