Algebra is as simple as arithmetic in this previously unpublished perspective that keeps true to back-to-basics values. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division create the structure of all algebraic expressions and equations, so it makes sense to study algebra by operation. In an organized exposition designed to naturally reinforce basic skills, each operation is explored in its own chapter as it is applied to virtually every algebraic term in an elementary algebra course. The interdependence of the operations is a running theme throughout the book and is particularly highlighted in the last two chapters, demonstrating how the operations work together when solving equations in one and two variables. This novel method for studying algebra contains insights to be found nowhere else and reveals over 20 common errors arising from a collapsing of arithmetic procedures.

Author Biography

Irma Pellei has been teaching mathematics from grades 7 through 12 in the New York City public school system since September 2000, first at Elizabeth Blackwell Middle School and currently at Forest Hills High School since 2006. She holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Stony Brook University and a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School.
