by Martin Wiesendanger (Author), Margaret Wiesendanger (Author)
Samples of art from the W. E. Groves Collection, which contains paintings, prints, watercolors, daguerreotypes, and miniatures, including 155 portraits and 217 landscapes. Louisiana painting of the 19th century exhibits literal subjectivism- hard-core reality flavored with an exuberant romanticism and seasoned with the shudder of a Gothic novel. In this volume entitled Nineteenth Century Louisiana Painters and Paintings are samples of art from the W.E. Groves Collection, which contains some 1,500 paintings, prints, watercolors, daguerreotypes, and miniatures, including 155 portraits and 217 landscapes pertaining to Louisiana.
Front Jacket
W.E. Groves developed his passion for acquiring art after restoring a painting as a Christmas gift for his wife. Nineteen Century Louisiana Painters and Paintings is the result of over 30 years of Grove's collecting. With the indexing, cataloguing, and preparation completed by Martin and Margaret Wiesendanger, this catalogue features a detailed selection from the fifteen hundred paintings, prints, watercolors, daguerreotypes, and miniatures from the W.E. Groves Collection and the I.M. Cline Library that contribute to preserving the history and beauty of 19th century Louisiana.
