That was my brother, Mark, in response to my proud announcement that I had just spent my inheritance buying the local newspaper in the tiny Midwestern village where I lived. Mark had always looked up to me and even sought my advice on important issues, so this less than warm response surprised me.

This is the first book in a series titled Memoirs of an Average Man. I am a 65-year-old white male from Michigan-it doesn't get any more average than that. I've claimed that I wanted to become an author for most of my life, and I eventually got that opportunity about 10 years ago when I bought that newspaper. It was a fulfilling and humbling experience, but it didn't completely scratch the itch; to claim that I am a 'real' author, I felt I had to write a book, and here it is.
