Like a Love Song sums up the author's feelings about living in South County, Rhode Island, and his relationship with family, friends, his Maker, nature, and the ocean. His poems are filled with the wonder of seeing deer in his meadow, of fishermen going through the channel as the sun rises over Galilee, and of discovering a piece of sea glass buried beneath the sand. To Maia, creating art is akin to breathing. The work she makes derives from many sources-pre-existing texts, dreams, memories, and nature, to name a few. She approaches art the same way she approached playing as a child-exploratory and whimsical.
The poems Joe wrote resonated with her experience growing up in Narragansett, Rhode Island-from sunburnt beach trips with her family to sea-scented walks through the woods. You can find a part of her in the illustrations throughout this book.
