by Margaret L. Siegrist (Author)
"How Far Away Is Never" is a true life story about WWII, as seen through the eyes of a child from Croatia. She tells of her happy times and subsequent misery under Tito's Yugoslavia. It is an untold story of a nation once silenced, about the people who died with her, and for her, and their agony and defeat. Margaret's book may be about those tragic times but she chooses to focus on her triumphs, her courage to survive under constant attacks by Tito's Partisan, British and Russian bombings as their planes deployed one bomb after another at will. The footprints she left across the Austrian mountains in her wooden shoes may still be there, but at war's end it was her faith and Catholic Church that bound her wounds and kept the beacons of hope alive. However dimly it burned, Croatia was always with her.
Author Biography
The most vivid and astonishing chronicle of survival. Margaret reveals experiences that had a profound impact on her life. Violently uprooted from her ancestral homeland her family set on a journey to evade Tito's communist that terrorized Croatia. The trail to freedom was violent and full of traps. While thousands of soldiers and civilians moved toward Austria Tito's partisans and their allies constantly attacked killing everyone in sight. It is there that her childhood froze in time. With loss of her parents and sister young Margaret became an orphan whose world came to an abrupt end. All seemed lost and frozen in the fields of Karavanken Alps. Her thoughts retreated to the deepest recesses of her mind until political change swept across Europe and rebirth of a proud nation that suffered under foreign domination surfaced. This book is a witness to human endurance sacrifice a shining example of a soul that never lost hope or will to survive.
