Author Biography

Vic Dunaway has been writing about fishing for more than half a century--the last 42 years for Florida Sportsman magazine, of which he was founding editor. During the 10 years before that he was Outdoor Editor of the Miami Herald. Prior to becoming editor of the magazine in 1969, he had written many articles for national publications, appeared on television fishing shows for CBS, ABC, PBS and the BBC, and served as consultant for several major fishing tackle manufacturers. Now retired as editor of Florida Sportsman, Dunaway continues to contribute his long-running monthly humor column, Waterfront View, and a monthly cooking department, Sportsman's Kitchen. A native Floridian, Dunaway was born in Ft. Myers in 1928. Following a hitch in the army toward the end of World War II, he earned his bachelor's degree in journalism from Florida State University (1950). He married Cheryl Muster of Boynton Beach, FL in 1949. Their three children are Mari, Dan and David. Although widely recognized as the leading authority on Florida fishing, his travels in pursuit of fish have taken him from Canada to South America, as well as to Europe and Australia, and many islands in the Bahamas and Caribbean. Forty years ago Dunaway developed the now-famous Unit-Knot series, which allows the angler to use only one basic knot formation and adapt it to virtually every fishing application, including line to hook, line to line, line to leader, looping and snelling. Through reproduction in uncounted books, magazine articles, newspapers, brochures and product packages, the Uni-knot series has long since become firmly established as one of the most popular rigging systems in angling circles worldwide. Among many honors he has received are lifetime achievement awards from the Florida Outdoor Writers Association, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the Metropolitan South Florida Fishing Tournament. He is a member of the original Fishing Hall of Fame and has been named a "Florida Icon" by the business magazine, Florida Trend. Dunaway has written several popular books, one of which--Complete Book of Baits, Rigs and Tackle, first published in 1971-- is an all-time best seller among how-to fishing books. Even that one, however, is rivaled in sales by his others: Sport Fish of Florida, published in 1998; Sport Fish of the Gulf of Mexico (2000); Sport Fish of the Atlantic (2001); Sport Fish of Fresh Water (2002); Sport Fish of the Pacific (2004); and Anglers Cookbook (2005).
