by Elena Imbimbo (Author)
Alice Carta went to Canada to leave her bad memories of London behind for good. An archaeologist by trade, she chose a job in a library in a tiny, remote town in Nova Scotia. A peaceful, sleepy village with a view of the bay, in which she could process difficult emotions without anyone bothering her. She adopted a companion, a German Shepherd named Boldy, and settled in for a reclusive chapter in her life.
Then she found the body. Boldy discovers a man's body half-buried in the snow, which pulls Alice into close relationship with the local Chief Constable's office. Against everything in her, Alice gets swept into a baffling whirlwind of intrigue, arson, deception and murder. When Philip, her friend and co-conspirator from London shows up unexpectedly, the two find themselves trying to unravel a case of stolen artifacts, hidden identities and a decades-old curse.
A secret bunker in the library holds clues to a World War II alliance between two local men--long dead--which may prove to be at the core of all the mystery. Alice and Philip play their own cards, while pretending to be fully on board with law enforcement, and also keeping close to their civilian contacts. When it seems that everyone in the town of Steep Ridge might be complicit, the pair rush to solve the murders before they join the body count.
