In the presentation of this study, emphasis is placed on engineer technique. All units mentioned, unless otherwise designated, were American. The crossing was made in the face of strong and effective enemy resistance, the 5th Division was the only division attempting the crossing (often acting independently despite being part of a corps), and the operation was entirely under American control and carried out almost entirely with American organizations.
