The dramatic increase in the number of Internet-connected devices comprising the so-called "Internet of Things" has created numerous benefits for consumers. For example, "smart" thermostats in the home can improve energy efficiency and wearable technology can monitor a user's health and fitness. In recent years, children's toys have evolved from simple, stuffed teddy bears to "connected toys" - toys that are connected to the Internet and can talk to and interact with children. Last year, it was estimated that connected toys were a $2.8 billion industry.
