Glasgow has a long and rich railway history and was once one of the world's foremost centres of railway engineering. The city is home to the largest suburban rail network in the United Kingdom outside of London, and also to the third oldest underground system in the world; a reflection of being the Second City of the Empire at that time. Over the years there has been investment and expansion, but also closures and uncertainty. Chapters include the history of the four main termini, the suburban network, the Subway, the Glasgow Corporation Tramways, the present day, and future developments.

Author Biography

James McVeigh was born in London in 1989 and grew up in Johnstone, Renfrewshire; a relatively leafy suburban town to the west of Glasgow; and has had a strong interest in the railways in the local area since childhood. While interested in the trains themselves, he found himself more fascinated with the amount of disused infrastructure that had been left to rot, particularly the line between Elderslie and Kilmacolm, which partly inspired the writing of this book. Outside of writing, he is employed in the civil service and is studying a Bachelor's degree in Law. In his spare time he is also a commissioned officer with the local Army Cadet Force. He enjoys playing piano, exploring old railway lines and going on adventures with his wife Kimberley, a Principal Teacher of English.
